Amtrak Train Derails Near Huntington Injuring Two

The James Whitcomb Riley No. 50 derailed early today five miles east of Huntington West Virginia injuring two people. About 180 passengers and crew watched as two coaches left the track and a quarter mile of track was torn up.

Explosions Hit refinery town injure many and delay ship

Explosions shook a refinery town ten miles south of Philadelphia injuring at least 29 people. Forty three aboard the Corinthos were unaccounted for while all vessels Edgar M Queeny crew were safe. The American tanker Edgar M Queeny struck the Corinthos unloading 100000 barrels of oil at a British Petroleum dock, igniting fires on both ships and shattering glass across a 12 block area. Delaware County Fire Marshal George Lewis described the blast as felt in Marcus Hook.

103 Year Resident Martha Nelson Dies in Ohio

Martha Nelson, committed to the Columbus State School for the Feeble Minded in 1875 at age four, died at 103 after 99 years in state institutions. The Ohio Department of Mental Health announced her death and funeral arrangements, noting she had no known family and that records were destroyed in a fire. She became a national symbol for reform in treatment of the mentally retarded.

Democrats Move to Create Own Energy Plan in Congress

Congressional Democrats under Speaker Carl Albert set up a task force led by Rep. Jim Wright to craft a unified energy program with time tables and cost estimates. The effort aims to counter President Ford by presenting a detailed plan within a month and curb duplicative proposals.

Banker's wife kidnapped in Mishawaka found unharmed

Mary Lou Schwartz, 34, was abducted from her Mishawaka home by two men and held 18 hours. Her husband Dennis paid a $300,000 ransom. Police found her bound in a delivery van behind a bank in Elkhart. FBI official James Martin called the sum “a lot of money.”

Middletown Weather Forecast Night Into Saturday

Rain or snow is forecast for the Middletown area tonight and Saturday with overnight lows in the upper 20s to low 30s and daytime highs in the upper 30s to low 40s. Yesterday's high reached 37 with a 32 overnight low and 67 inch rain recorded.

Harris Poll Finds Most Would Deposit Tax Rebate

A Harris poll of 1 532 households from Jan 16 to Jan 20 shows 41 percent would save any tax rebate, 39 percent would spend on major purchases, 12 percent would invest for growth, and 8 percent were unsure. The survey also notes 67 percent favor a tax cut, 21 percent oppose it, with 12 percent unsure. Those under $15 000 income are likelier to alter plans if the rebate passes.
