Draft-Age Men Write Own Amendments Proposed by Slack
West Virginia congressman Rep. John Slack plans to let draft-age students draft amendments to the Selective Service law. He will back any bill they write and seek hearings before the House Armed Services Committee this spring. Slack says the program invites youth to influence draft policy and will involve campus groups and nonstudents alike. He aims to publish a supporting statement in the Congressional Record and arrange youthful witnesses for testimony. The idea traces to the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago where young people sought a way to participate beyond protests.
