The Agriculture Department proposes limits on terms like pure all and 100 per cent on processed meat labels. Current rules allow misleading uses. hot dog rules already require clear ingredient disclosure after a court ruling. Public comment is open until May 31 with no effective date yet set.
Bud Krogh pleaded guilty to conspiring to violate Daniel Ellsberg's civil rights in the Ellsberg home burglary. The former White House aide, who once said the job came right out of the Oval Office, faces up to 10 years and a 10000 dollar fine, signaling possible impact on President Nixon.
In Cincinnati, hospital officials described the Northern Kentucky infant's condition as satisfactory after a kidney transplant on Wednesday. The donor was a young Californian killed in a traffic accident, with the organ sent by air for the operation. The transplant, arranged through a national Cross Match Bank with UCLA surgery help, involved one of the country’s largest tissue matching banks.
Former Philadelphia mayor Richardson K. Dilworth aged 75 died Wednesday in Philadelphia from a malignant brain tumor. He served as mayor from 1955 to 1962 and previously held posts including treasurer district attorney and school board president.
President Nixon asks Congress to end the 22 percent depletion allowance on foreign production and cut the foreign tax credit to reduce oil firms taxes. He also seeks to end intangible drilling cost deductions, ease air rules, boost energy research and offshore leasing, and push a quick emergency energy bill with gas rationing. Senators Long and Ribicoff signal openness to cutting depletion and intangibles, while import data show crude imports at a multi year low and refined product imports rebounding.
The long delayed federal right of way permit for the trans Alaska pipeline was signed by Secretary Morton. He warned more hurdles remain before oil reaches markets. Alyeska Pipeline's E L Patton said the action is not the final hurdle and spring construction could begin. Oil may reach the lower 48 by 1977 if weather cooperates. President Nixon urged quick study of competing gas line and any additional oil and gas routes.
The Middletown Area YMCA will phase out the residency program by May due to low capacity and financial concerns. Executive Director B P Allen says the 96 rooms cannot be modernized and most tenants are older men. remaining floors may be repurposed for YMCA programs or leased to a local service group. New officers for 1974 include Tom Blake as president and B C Haselton as first vice president.
Thirty pupils in Room 12 Newport Kentucky send a letter to President Nixon asking for renewed support. Their teacher Steve Schwein notes the class includes four dissenters who still signed. The letter accompanies cuff links and a tie clasp bearing the American flag, bought from stray money and asked Nixon to wear them during the State of the Union message.
Karen Kirby will depart Middletown's legal aid office after 1968 to lead the Anchorage office under a two year contract. Jerry Daly, a Xavier University and Chase Law School graduate, will replace her and oversee 10 lawyers. The office provides non-criminal aid to low income residents on matters like child support welfare and Social Security.
More than 75 truckers picketed at least 10 trucking firms in Akron and West Ridgefield as a threatened shutdown started. Firms targeted included Consolidated Freightways and Pacific Intermountain Express, according to the Council of Independent Truckers.
