Nyerere appeals for calm after Tanganyika mutiny

Tanganyika President Julius Nyerere urged calm after an army mutiny in Dar es Salaam. He warned the nation not to repeat looting and violence, called for non panic, and noted 14 killed with many injured as 30 British officers and 16 loaned noncoms were dismissed.

Birthday Boy Grady Brumfield Killed Walking Home

Grady Brumfield aged 9 was struck and killed by a car while returning home from school in suburban Metairie New Orleans. He had finished tests early for a birthday party planned by his family. Two schoolmates reported he ran into the vehicle’s path near his home.

Fire destroys four stores at Page Manor center near air base

A large blaze at the Page Manor shopping center near Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton destroyed Levitt's Cocktail Lounge, Manor Clothes Store, Jim Miller's Page Manor Furniture, and the Holiday House toy store. No injuries were reported. damage estimated at about 200000. Fire crews from three departments battled the flames for 90 minutes, helped by a firewall between buildings. The base fire chief credited the firewall with limiting spread toward the base.
