Ike’s Funeral Car Won’t Haul Horses

Chessie System canceled plans to use the former Eisenhower funeral baggage car to haul horses for Nixon’s inauguration after a Huntington newspaper reported the arrangement. Horses will be moved by van from Cleveland to Washington. the car had 12 stalls and was to join the B&O Transportation Museum.

Heavy Air Attacks Continue In South

U S war planes conducted over 400 strikes in South Vietnam across Wednesday and today as the second straight day of heavy air attacks. The raids aimed to improve positions before a cease fire and focused below the DMZ where Vietnam forces claim a border strip. Command reports 77 North Vietnamese killed, 49 weapons seized, South Vietnamese losses 10 dead and 51 wounded with several accidental bombings near Da Nang causing casualties. B52s carried 90 strikes totaling about 2700 tons of explosives, many below the DMZ and along the Saigon River corridor.

Early April Rain Forecast Dampens Weekend Plans

Forecasters predict rain tonight and tomorrow with lows in the 40s and highs rising to the low 60s. Yesterday's high in Middleton hit 62 and a cooler overnight low followed. State and national forecasts appear on page 3 with the weather map.

Parochaid petition filed to save tax credits for parochial students

Gov John Gilligan said he and parents filed an affidavit with the U.S. Supreme Court seeking to allow a 90 dollar per pupil tax credit for parochial school families while the constitutionality of the plan is resolved. The plan was struck down last December by a federal panel, and the state is appealing.
