Court battle looms as Gilligan signs six bills

Outgoing Governor Gilligan signed six Democratic bills into law amid a legal fight. Senate leader Ocasek opposed signing without a stay order secured by Justice Celebrezze, while Republicans argued the measures lack constitutional validity. House Speaker Riffe had signed earlier. Brown had repeatedly indicated he would not sign.

Local couple eligible for Ohio lottery million dollar drawing

Richard A. Prichard of 811 Baker Court Middletown earned a spot among the 100 finalists for a million dollar lottery drawing to be held in the Cincinnati area in late March or early April. He and his wife Debbie prayed for success as he described the moment of news. Prichard, an Armco Steel employee, noted this was his sixth ticket and one of only a few purchased after a long break.

Rhodes Inaugural Set For Monday Noon In Ohio

Rhodes will be sworn in as Ohio's 63rd chief executive on the west steps of the state capitol at noon Monday with a potential move to the rotunda if weather turns bad. The 65 year old already served two terms ending in 1971 and will take the ceremonial oath alongside fellow Republicans including Secretary of State Ted W. Brown who also takes an oath at 11 a.m. Democratic officials and state leaders will join in the ceremonies with Sharon Rhodes Markham, the governor elects daughter, aboard to hold the Bible for the oath reaffirmation by Chief Justice C. William ONeill.
