Tatum said a Mississippi State student, unnamed, was among those detained the night of September 30 in Oxford. The youth was there to testify before the grand jury. A crowd gathered in the cafeteria west wing where Meredith usually dines. as Meredith, with three Justice Department agents, entered, students moved to the east wing causing a commotion.

Co-pilot First Lt. F. T. Medrick, 26, from Hastings New York, and navigator Capt. H. T. Jones, 34, from Oakland California, escaped with mild shock. The bomber from Lincoln Nebraska AFB had stopped at McConnell AFB for a routine training flight when Pudwill signaled trouble and attempted to circle back.
