Hostages Held At Ohio Mental Facility In Shootout

Helen Binckley and two other women were held nearly six hours by two convicts at the Junctional City Treatment Facility in southeastern Ohio. Troopers stormed the office, killing one convict Michael Woods and seriously wounding the other as they faced a 7 p.m. departure deadline. The hostages were unharmed and the incident ended with police action and a brief standoff.

Energy Office probes oil stockpiling rumors amid shortages

Washington AP The Federal Energy Office began examining rumors that oil companies stockpile oil and that railroads and trucking firms hoard fuel. No evidence yet. data requests issued to majors, independents, railroads and trucks. IRS sues Standard Oil Indiana for 49 million tax claims. Airline fuel cutbacks cause about 700 departures lost. total 1,500 daily cancellations since crisis began.

Glue halt request over overly sticky Krazy Glue

The Consumer Product Safety Commission urged nine firms to stop selling a cyanoacrylate glue sold under many brands including Krazy Glue. A batch of 50,000 tubes is detained in Los Angeles. Chairman Richard O Simpson said the adhesive is powerful enough to accidentally bind skin but may still be generally useful. A public hearing will decide if it should remain on the market.

Wholesale prices jump as energy costs surge in December

December wholesale prices rose 2.2 percent seasonally adjusted, 2.5 percent unadjusted, ending 1973 with an 18.2 percent year over year rise. Energy costs led gains with fuels up 12.3 percent, heating oil up 27 percent and kerosene up 29 percent, while crude oil increased 5 percent and coal 0.7 percent.

Snow is forecast for the Middletown area tonight with lows in the 20s and continued snow into Wednesday possibly mixing with rain. Highs tomorrow are expected in the 30s, with yesterday’s high 26 and overnight low 6. The extended outlook shows cloudy skies and 30s by day with 20s at night Thursday through Saturday and a chance of snow Friday.

Tanker Atrotos Fire After Boiler Explosion In Gulf

AP reports a 579-foot Greek oil tanker Atrotos exploded near the boiler, sparking a fire amid fuel oil tanks in the Gulf of Mexico about 250 miles south southwest of the area. The 29 crew prepared to abandon ship but stayed aboard. vessel bound for Corpus Christi from Venezuela. The M V Shirley Sykes offered aid and the Coast Guard cutter Valiant and a fixed wing plane were en route.

Five named to state ethics board in Ohio

Gov. Gilligan named six Ohio officials to the State Ethics Commission, a mixed Republican and Democratic slate to oversee ethics complaints and hearings. The appointments include James Slater Gibson of Toledo, James C. Kirby Jr. of Columbus, E. W. Lampson of Jefferson, Barbara Rawson of Shaker Heights, Bruce I. Petrie of Cincinnati, and Rev. Robert A. Raines of Columbus, with staggered six year terms.
