Shovel Crossing Clears I-70 Delays Noted By Protesters

In Barnesville Ohio protesters watched as two 4 to 5 million pound coal shovels crossed Interstate 70 to Egypt Valley delaying traffic only briefly. The move, allowed by a 1960s agreement, finished by 3:30 a.m. with minor shoulder damage and heavy security.

Vietnam War Upturn Seen With 97 Attacks Reported

U S air raids continued as Communist forces pressed a winter spring campaign in South Vietnam with 97 attacks in 24 hours across the Mekong Delta Saigon area and central highlands. gov t losses totaled four killed and 23 wounded, while North Vietnamese and Viet Cong casualties reached 96 in four clashes. The U S also reported heavy B52 strikes in North Vietnam panhandle, dropping about 1300 tons.

No Bomb Found On Plane

Air Force specialists cleared a Trans World Airlines Boeing 747 after a bomb threat prompted a Madrid to New York flight to divert to Ellsworth AFB South Dakota. A TWA spokesman said further searches would occur as 233 passengers remained calm aboard.

Netherlands Recognizes East Germany and Exchanges Ambassadors

Berlin and The Hague announced mutual recognition of East Germany and the exchange of ambassadors. Talks began December 27, following Belgium as the first NATO member to recognize the regime. About two dozen non communist states have since established relations.

Nixon May Skip State of Union Message
