Freshman Gene Damschroder Takes Seat In Ohio House

In Columbus, Republican Gene Damschroder of Fremont, a freshman in the 110th General Assembly, narrowly made roll-call votes after learning electronic voting. Also seated were two other freshmen, including William Donham, while Frederick Deering prepared to learn House procedures and district issues in Ottawa, Erie, and Wood counties.

Navy Divers Join Clemente Search

U S Navy divers joined the search for the plane in which Roberto Clemente died and the four others perished. The Coast Guard cutter Sagebrush searched about 1 1/2 miles off San Juan as civilian divers had failed to find the DC7 wreckage. Clemente led Puerto Rico relief efforts after the Managua earthquake and players from the Pirates arrived to offer condolence. Governor Hernandez Colón spoke at his inauguration calling Clemente a glory for Puerto Rico. The mourning capital reflected the loss with flag at half staff and a minute of silence.

Miners Pension Settlement Gives Up to 20000 Retired Workers New Benefits

Washington AP reports a settlement in a 33 year old suit against the United Mine Workers Welfare and Retirement Fund will grant annual pensions of at least 1000 dollars to up to 20000 retired miners or widows. Eligibility now requires 20 years in mining and five years in union mines after 1946, potentially affecting 9000 to 20000 beneficiaries.

Draft Lottery Postponements End for 1972 Group

Washington AP report states that 68,000 men from the 1972 draft pool will be placed in an extended priority group and could be drafted in March if a call occurs. If March passes without a call, they lose draft eligibility. Fewer than 10,000 draftees expected in 1973 from new lottery pool.
