Roof collapses at Long Beach YWCA pool killing woman

A roof section over the shallow end of the Long Beach YWCA pool collapsed during family night, killing Jo Spinelli and injuring six others including her husband John Spinelli and 12 year old Peter Tolton. One injury was serious and Sara Gibson suffered fractures and lacerations.

Not Afraid Hero Boy Faces Threats After Burglary Capture

Ten year old Leon President drew a LAPD citation and toy handcuffs from aiding police in arresting juvenile burglars. He faced death threats and beatings from gangs in Hollywood, leading his mother to plan moving him to his father’s city for protection. Leon, 4 feet 6 inches, 90 pounds, helped arrest a 10 and 11 year old and a 12 year old girl after a others’ burglary spree. He said it was nothing.

Demonstrators clash with guards at Ohio Capitol

About 25 demonstrators claiming to represent unemployed workers tried to force their way into the Capitol in Columbus but were repulsed by security guards. A crowd of around 75 gathered on the steps to protest Ohio being excluded from extended unemployment benefits. Six guards blocked the west entrance in a pushing match. three protesters entered the building but left when Governor Rhodes did not appear. the governor was in Florida for the weekend.

Influenza outbreak to subside with spring approach

An unusual late-winter flu epidemic blamed for 875 American deaths last week may subside as spring arrives. A CDC spokesman noted it would be unusual for a major outbreak this late in the year. The CDC counted 875 pneumonia and influenza related deaths in the week ending Feb. 21, 339 above normal, meeting epidemic criteria.

Middletown Area Mild Weather With Weekend Shower Chance

Mild temperatures persist in Middletown with highs in the upper sixties today. Skies clear tonight but a chance of showers is forecast for Sunday. Overnight lows reach the upper 30s to low 40s statewide. Tomorrow’s high in the mid sixties. Monday remains warm but cloudy. Cooler air moves into the Ohio Valley Tuesday and Wednesday.

Crowds greet Nixon in Canton during China visit

Tens of thousands cheered Richard Nixon in Canton as he toured Liberation Road and the Li River area. Security guards faced pushing crowds while Nixon waved and rejoined his convoy. He travels with Dr Shang Teh-ting and medic Robert Dunn who treats phlebitis and uses anticoagulants.
