Weathering Steel Bridges In Ohio Appear Rusty But Safer
Ohio transportation officials say three bridges built with weathering steel look rusty but are safer and stronger than other bridges. Akron West Exchange Street overpass and Frank Road bridge in Columbus over the Scioto River, plus Ohio 67 near Upper Sandusky in Wyandot County, all show weathering steel with oxide protection after three years. The material costs more per pound but saves painting and allows design improvements such as fewer concrete supports.
