A KC135 air tanker from Fielson Air Force Base exploded near a guard house at the field entrance killing nine people. Seven aboard the plane died along with two inside the guard house and waiting room after the blast. The four engine craft veered left and crashed a quarter mile from the gate, smashing into the Alaska Highway by the base, 26 miles north of Fairbanks.
