Soviet Luna 20 unmanned mission returns to earth with lunar highland soil samples. Landing occurred at 10 12 Moscow time amid snow and wind. Samples sealed for delivery to the Soviet Academy of Sciences.
Israeli planes bombed guerrilla bases in southeast Lebanon for a second day as the UN Security Council met in New York. Mirage and Skyhawk formations hit targets outside villages while artillery shelled main roads near the border to hinder escape. A dying guerrilla is carried from Marjayoun as witnesses report many wounded left behind.
Taylor, a Ulster government minister who had accused the British army of softness toward the IRA, was ambushed Friday night as he entered his car after visiting his family business. He was shot in the jaw neck and chest and later moved to a Belfast hospital in satisfactory condition. The Officials claimed responsibility for a prior Aldershot bombing and denounced him as unscrupulous. Political leaders condemned the attack.
President Nixon said he and Premier Chou En-lai reached some areas of agreement after a week of talks and will issue a communique Sunday in Shanghai. The document will be general, promising cultural and journalistic exchanges, expanded trade, and tourist travel loosening.
In Washington the anti-busing amendment passed 43 to 40 as Republicans led by Hugh Scott claimed absence of five presidential candidates and 12 others could have changed the result. The Griffin measure bars courts from ordering busing and blocks federal funds used to coerce districts into desegregation.
Two U S helicopter accidents within three hours killed nine Americans, with 11 other personnel saved. The Da Nang mishap involved an Army rotor blade striking a ship searchlight during takeoff, while the Cam Ranh Bay crash stemmed from engine failure. Among the dead were Brig Gen Phan Dinh Soan, Col Nho An Dong, and Col Albert W Smarr Jr.
Eight Ohio cities agreed to pool 65000 for a joint legal fund to challenge Ohio Bell Telephone Co. rate increase that would lift company revenue by 166 million dollars annually. Columbus would pay 20000 and others scale by size with hear ing set for late summer.
Deputy state insurance Director E. E. Eckert says new Ohio regs will ban fancy words and require clear disclosure of what agents sell. A hearing date for the rules will be announced next week.
Colder but drier weather is forecast for the remainder of the weekend in Ohio. A low pressure system moved through bringing rain and snow, now into West Virginia. Behind it, dry air and falling temperatures with a low near 20 tonight and a high around 40 tomorrow under sunny skies.
