Reporters describe Beijing subways as newer and cheaper at two cents a ride with few muggings but long waits between trains. Technical faults plague the 15 mile system with cars misaligned to platforms and loud screeches scaring livestock nearby.
Israeli raids were reported in southern Lebanon in retaliation for guerrilla attacks as U N mediator Gunnar V Jarring arrived in Israel to revive his stalled peace effort. Lebanese army said two Israeli infantry battalions and an armored battalion attacked at dawn with heavy air and artillery support. One Lebanese soldier wounded and six guerrillas killed. Arab gunmen killed a young married couple in an ambush near the border. Jarring arrived after talks in Cairo and Amman and said he would inform himself on the Middle East situation.
Bomb blasts attributed to the IRA hit a Belfast city arcade a nearby warehouse and an Antrim bus depot injuring six people including two police officers and a soldier while London and Dublin police questioned suspects and seized weapons.
American ground troops fought a five hour battle 42 miles east of Saigon with North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces. Twenty one Americans were wounded none killed. U.S. bombers helicopters and artillery supported the fight. Additional air strikes targeted base camps along the western border.
Peking Premier Chou En-lai pledged to work unswervingly for normal relations with the United States during a banquet in honor of President Nixon. Nixon said the wall between the nations is being removed as talks move toward cultural exchanges, tourism, and trade machinery. Both leaders signaled cautious progress toward eventual full diplomatic ties, acknowledged as a long, slow process.
Seven year old Phillip Ruppert was found unhurt after more than a day missing on Snowmass at Aspen Colorado. He spent the night under dry pine needles near 8000 feet and suffered minor frostbite but no serious injuries. His father Henry and brother Charles accompanied him on the Colorado trip.
