Karl Albrecht Oberg, former Nazi SS general dubbed the butcher of Paris by the French, stands before a Paris military court for the opening of his trial. He faces charges of ordering mass arrests deportations and killings while commanding police forces in France during World War II.
In Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania a second quake in three days damaged hundreds of homes and buckled streets in a five block area above active coal mines. No injuries were reported as residents fled after underground explosions were heard. A similar tremor struck Allentown earlier.
A witness before the Senate judiciary committee on Earl Warren's nomination to be chief justice was arrested by police but released to his attorneys to return for further testimony. The committee, after a closed session, planned to reconvene at 2 p.m. EST to continue Warren's nomination hearing.
In Washington a Marine flier testified that comrades met in war prisoner camps had been instructed by superiors to divulge any information the Reds sought. Maj. Walter R. Harris, decorated for resisting pressure, said such guidance did not justify false statements like germ warfare. The court weighs Col. Frank Schwable who confessed to germ warfare participation after brutal treatment.
Columbus report says John M. Sims executive vice president of the Ohio Farm Bureau urged a national farm program fair to all regions. A six member parliamentary delegation warned the Mau Mau uprising in Kenya could last a generation. They reported 3,400 Mau Mau killed, 1,000 captured, and 30,000 Kikuyu jailed amid ongoing brutality as security forces press a campaign to crush the rebellion.

Ayres said sentiment hardens toward the Cleveland congressman and could push GOP voters to back William Saxbe in the May senatorial primary. Patronage disputes fuel the split among Akron conservatives and county Republicans regroup.
In St Louis three AF officials were found guilty of conspiring to extort 15 312 from Trojan Construction Co Oklahoma City to preserve labor peace on a pipeline project. They face up to 29 years imprisonment and 10 000 fines each on two counts with bond set at 50 000.
