The State Department disclosed that 11 of its employees in 1953 were marked as loyalty risks among 291 of motives labeled security risks out of 590 total dismissed. Democrat committee members pressed for full agency tallies showing how many dismissals were adjudged subversive.
The House Ways and Means Committee rejected Democratic proposals to cut most excise taxes by 50 percent and reconsider a 2% billion dollar cut in personal income taxes this year. Chairman Daniel A. Reed ruled the excise tax cut out of order, citing previous agreement that the tax revision package would avoid major rate changes. Rep Boggs proposed lowering rates to 10 percent, except liquor and tobacco. GOP leaders seek Eisenhower help to bolster support for the tax program amid possible presidential remarks, no decision yet.

Indian Lt. Gen. K S Thimayya, chairman of the Neutral Nations Repatriation Commission, completes his duties in Korea and heads home. He accompanied U S Ambassador Ellis Briggs and Kenneth Young to Tokyo for a brief vacation after overseeing the repatriation of about 6000 Indian troops. An 8th Army honor guard welcomed his departure at Seoul air base as Korean officials watched the ceremony conclude.
On Iwo Jima nine years after the battle Japanese workers salvage junk left from the fighting under an agreement with US military and a Japanese firm. The Sulphur sands, Mt Suribachi area and last US flag atop the peak remain as reminders while workers cut up a wrecked landing ship and bale metal for transfer to Japanese steamers offshore.
SPEIGNER Ala AP two white inmates a 20 year old Ronald Colly and 21 year old William Glover were shot during an attempted wall escape at Draper Prison early today. Officials said only these two were involved with three or more men believed seen. both were struck by crossfire from two tower guards using high powered shotguns.
