On White House orders Attorney General Clark sent FBI agents to 16 major steel companies to probe last week's steel price increase. Investigators will seek the cause of the price boost as part of a government inquiry.
The House pushed a one month stop gap extension of rent controls ahead of a broader debate. President Truman, aboard the Presidential Yacht Williamsburg, directed federal agencies to investigate the recent $5 per ton steel price rise and its possible anti trust implications.
Henry A. Wallace urged Congress that the Marshall Plan needs a new approach toward Russia and a new White House face as the first steps. He called the European Recovery Plan a blueprint for war and proposed an eight point alternative to fund reconstruction without Wall Street control. He warned that current policy could lead to war and outlined a UN backed fund with no political strings attached.
Senator Vicente J. Ph h resigns from the United Nations Palestine commission amid rising friction within the five member body tasked with partitioning the Holy Land. He will step down once Manila names his successor. resignation sent to Manila four days ago and not yet accepted.
Senator Glen Taylor of Idaho leaves the Democratic Party to join Henry A. Wallace on the Wallace ticket. He criticizes Wall Street and the military influence and says the third party is the place to fight for his principles. He believes Wallace has worldwide confidence and predicts a possible vice presidency.
Four Southern governors attacked President Truman’s civil rights program after meeting National Chairman McGrath. McGrath resisted demands to withdraw the plan or revive two thirds rule while signaling some concessions. He denied plans for an FBI force and defended the administration’s civil rights efforts against GOP critics.
Ezzard Charles recovered an $8,500 paycheck lost for over 18 hours after a fatal Baroudi clash. Mrs. Neta Huff found the check on a streetcar on her way from church. George Rhein said he intended to reward her but would not disclose the amount.
Park Board members refused to comment on reports they favored replacing Walter S Geckeler with Elmo Lingrel though a special session was held last night at the Gardner Richardson Employment Office Beedle said the board attended while Dowling could not be reached Geckeler said he had heard of activity but no official notice of action was given Lingrel declined to comment at a Rotary luncheon
Five buildings collapsed in Pocahontas Arkansas from an early morning blast likely caused by escaping butane gas. Henry Taylor was killed, Bob Allen rescued, and a shoe shop couple escaped with minor injuries as fire consumed the block. Police and fire crews battled flames and searched for trapped workers.
In Loveland near Cincinnati eight year old Jerry Calvery drowned after breaking through ice on O'Banion Creek while his cousin Tommy Bailey aged five was saved by brothers Jim and Bob Moe and two other youths. Fire crews recovered Jerry's body after a lengthy effort.
Minneapolis public school teachers walked out for higher pay and a full school year. The AFL Teachers Federation, representing about half of the 2,200 teachers, ordered the strike with pickets at several schools before the scheduled start. No classes were held across the district affecting 65,000 students in 94 schools.
In Prague police armed with bayonets entered Social Democratic party headquarters amid a Communist drive for control. Workers and students protested as Gottwald predicted a quick victory while a coalition doubt lingered after non Communist cabinet resignations. The action committee formed to back Prague actions listed key Social Democrat members and potential cabinet partners.
U S urges United Nations to ignore a Russian boycott and push for nationwide elections in Korea. Dr Philip C Jessup, deputy American delegate, tells the General Assembly the UN Korean Commission must proceed quickly to elect a national assembly, despite Soviet non cooperation. The Korea split centers on the 38th parallel with the north under Soviet control and the south under U S occupation.
In Jerusalem a Jewish spokesman alleged British personnel carried out the Ben Yehuda street bombing to impede identification of attackers. Arab sources claimed Arab commanders in British uniforms triggered the blast. Three inch mortar shells fired by Jews struck the Palestine police compound near the post office and a billet building, but no casualties were reported.
In Shreveport Louisiana an 11 year old and a nine year old boy told a juvenile court official they wrecked a grammar school because they liked the sound of falling objects. The father of the boy revealed their identities to city officials.
Senator Robert Taft visited Michigan denouncing the Democratic administration's foreign policy in Europe and the Far East. He avoided pledging in-state support for a Taft-Vandenberg contest, noting Vandenberg's status and saying one does not bid for second place in a state like Michigan.
Six people perish when a Wilmington area home burns in New Castle. Police identify victims including Charles Bungy, his six year old daughter Evi, a son Roger four, and aunt Alberta Chandler, all of whom are Black. Early reports note four children among the dead.
A House committee condemned heavy spending in the Panama Canal Zone as unjustifiable. It urged a 17 percent cut in President Truman's canal zone funds for the coming fiscal year and proposed raising ship tolls through the canal by 10 cents to a maximum of 1 dollar for loaded vessels.
Ashland based FE Myers and Bros announces a 75 cent dividend payable March 29 to stockholders of record March 15.
Iowa Supreme Court Justice Charles F. Wennerstrom, arriving from Nuremberg, questioned the objectivity of the German war trials and offered to debate the issue with an Army general in Washington. He disputed Brig Gen Taylor’s charge that his interview with a Chicago Tribune reporter harmed U S interests, insisting the interview was fair.
