The 40,000 NVA surround the Khe Sanh base with bunkers and trenches within 300 yards. Marine positions fear heavy casualties if withdrawal or reinforcement is attempted. Fog shrouds days of fighting as the battle, likely the war’s largest, is predicted to unfold over weeks.
North Vietnamese tanks near Khe Sanh village less than two miles from the Marine perimeter and near the air strip. The Lang Vei assault occurred two weeks earlier four miles west.
