An explosion damaged the Soviet Embassy in Washington and shattered windows in nearby buildings. A University Club maintenance man heard a single loud report and described it like a cannon. Debris suggested the blast occurred on a circular walkway by the entrance. police reported a man seen nearby but no arrests confirmed.
U S Marines resumed air attacks on Communist positions near Hue Citadel in Vietnam, hitting ammo dumps and fortified areas. Marines warned civilians to evacuate while enemy forces reportedly resupply through gates near the Citadel as 4 000 Allied troops press to seal off the city.
A humorous line jokes that men who fail their license tests end up as parking lot attendants. The quip relies on wordplay and light sarcasm about competence and jobs.
Gov Claude Kirk returns from California amid a statewide teachers strike that has kept about half of Florida’s 13 million pupils from class. He says he can handle the job by telephone and plans county visits to Miami to address the dispute with schools and state leaders. The Board of Education gave emergency powers to State Supt Floyd Christian as districts from Pensacola to Miami shutter schools and 26,000 of 60,844 teachers quit.
Six amateurs led by Ralph Plaisted depart Minneapolis to reach the North Pole by surface travel using snowmobiles. The team, including a pathologist and engineers, plans a 600 mile zigzag trek from Ward Hunt Island to the Pole, aiming for a 200 mile advance over last year.
Pope Paul VI appointed Bishop John J. Carberry of Columbus Ohio to succeed the late Joseph Cardinal Ritter as archbishop of St. Louis. Carberry 63, Brooklyn native, has led Columbus since January 16 1965. Ritter died June 10 and a consistory is expected.
The Food and Drug Commissioner has been given a go ahead to testify before a Senate panel examining the Johnson administration LSD proposal. He had been cleared after earlier being kept from a Monday hearing, with officials saying no attempt to silence him.
The forecast for Southwest Ohio and the Miami valley calls for clear and continued cold tonight with lows from zero to 6 above. Thursday will be fair and not as cold as today. Yesterday’s high was 29 degrees and a half inch of snow fell in the area. This morning’s low was 2 degrees.
