The Mansfield Fisher Body walkout triggers up to 100000 layoffs as 80k cited and possibly more, idling lines in 22 of 23 GM plants nationwide. UAW and GM condemn the action as illegal with no immediate talks planned in Mansfield.
Sukarno ends one man rule by surrendering executive powers. remains president in name only. He was warned Congress might investigate and try him if he did not hand over powers, marking a climactic shift after 21 years in power.
