A Harris poll shows a 76 percent majority call Ford a nice guy while only 39 percent think he will be a strong decisive president and 41 percent doubt his grasp of national issues. Seventy seven percent rate him as a man of high integrity.
A federal court freed two top Nixon aides on no bond terms for a 2/2 to 5-year sentence plan linked to a garage saucer probe. The trio faced charges tied to covert activities and actions in the investigation.
Three close Nixon aides John Mitchell H R Haldeman and John Ehrlichman must serve 22 to 8 years after being found guilty of conspiring to obstruct justice and lying under oath. Robert Mardian gets 10 months to three years. All may appeal and remain free without bond during appeals.
The American Medical Association files a federal suit to block HEW rules on utilization reviews for Medicaid and Medicare patients. President Malcolm C. Todd calls the provisions legally and morally wrong, arguing reviews should involve treating physicians and be limited to timely, competent decisions by those who know the patient.
Washington reports January consumer prices rose six tenths of one percent led by cereals bakery products and fruits and vegetables. Food costs climbed eight tenths from December while overall CPI was 11.7 percent higher than a year earlier and index stood at 156.1.
Clear skies and 30s expected tonight in Middletown with fair conditions and highs near 50s on Saturday. Extended outlook hints at rain Sunday, snow flurries Monday, and rain Tuesday.
Census data show the average household size fell below 3.0 for the first time, driven by more people living alone. Ohio Adult Parole Authority chief Shoemaker announced new regulations excluding drug pushers rapists armed robbers and other serious crimes from shock parole. Effective March 1 the rules expand offenses disqualifying inmates from early release including first degree felonies murder kidnapping and major narcotics offenses after a yearlong program review.
Authorities in West Virginia Pennsylvania and Ohio hunt a suspected bell theft ring after 13 bells were stolen from Brooke and Hancock County schools and churches. Police warn the bells may be sold in antique markets and have alerted neighboring states.
