A nationwide survey finds retail food prices average 3 percent lower than January highs while other living costs hold near postwar peaks. Wide regional variations appear as the commodity markets show some relief but not a broad price drop.
Pittsburgh AP notes Benjamin F. Fairless president of U S Steel argues Carnegie-Illinois Steel’s price rise for semi finished steel reflects a supply adjustment and not a broad demand upturn. He says finished product prices are unchanged and the move mirrors trade changes rather than a general trend. The report also covers a government bureau study on grocery and meat prices across 12 cities showing declines in 13 of 20 foods and increases in five with notable drops in pork and eggs.
Senator Byrd urges Southern Democrats to hold their fire yet stay ready as Congress debates President Truman's civil rights proposals. He says the South should decide calmly on events and be prepared to act, while Southern lawmakers push a resolution against the program and plan to meet with governors and Democratic leaders.
In Carlsbad New Mexico a four year old was grabbed by an eagle while playing in the yard. His mother Mrs C J Reinhart pulled the talons free with pliers and carried him to a doctor. Her husband returned and killed the bird with a bed slat. Three talons pierced the boy’s skin.
Prague reports a crisis as Premier Gottwald demands a government reshuffle between Russia and the west. He seeks to name a new cabinet excluding three coalition parties after their resignations. President Benes remains noncommittal as rumors of an emergency assembly election circulate.
Ohio parole board granted paroles to Wesley Amyx Ellis W. and Josephice from the State Reformatory at Mansfield effective March 24. Amyx and Ige were arrested October 27 after accosting a woman. Price, from Pershing Ave., was held for Butler County Grand Jury on a robbery charge.
Public Works Director George B. Sowers proposes moving city squirrels from the statehouse lawn to conservation parks to restore their health. He cites urban life as the cause of their anemia and mangy condition and asks how to trap them alive and obtain replacements, delegating the matter to State Conservation Commissioner Buck Rider.
Caldwell Ohio AP reports a hillside strip mined slope slid onto State Route 21 near the Nothel Washington county line. thawing weather after extreme cold triggered the 12 acre slide affecting two homes and a large quonset hut garage.
Lafayette Lodge 37 Knights of Pythias marked the 76th local and 84th statewide anniversary with a dinner for 190 members and wives. William Webster gave the invocation as officers welcomed guests and 50 year members received pins.
In a second floor duel at a uyahoga Heights home patrolman Norman Reeker 30 was killed and burglar Barney Davis 25 wounded. Six women hid in a bathroom as shots rang out and officer Edward Myer returned fire after a phone call from Mrs Metta Burg. The burglar forced occupants to the bath room at pistol point before the exchange.
Denver AP Carroll Reece Republican national chairman warns the nation faces a breakdown of the two party system. He tells western state leaders history shows evils of many parties and accuses the Democrat administration of risking a system collapse. He cites Southern secession talk as troubling but says two party stability benefits all regions.
A harsh cold snap grips areas east of the Rockies and into the Atlantic seaboard with lows down to 20 below in North Dakota and Wisconsin and around 14 to 15 below in parts of Michigan. Florida stays milder while forecasts foresee moderating temperatures in most cold regions and a warming trend in the Midwest over the weekend.
President A F Whitney of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen announced he joined Americans for Democratic Action. Whitney had left the Progressive Citizens of America on January 17 due to its backing of Henry A Wallace third party movement.
AP reports 82 year old Steven R. Cevera died in a hospital from burns after a kerosene explosion while trying to start a fire in his kitchen range.
President Truman told Puerto Ricans that appointing an island born governor is a step toward greater self government. He urged Congress to grant Puerto Rico the right to decide its political relationship with the United States. He praised democracy and the cooperation between the U S and Puerto Rico before departing on the Williamsburg to St Thomas and St Croix for official visits.
A grocery warehouse and a downtown business building burned in two fires in Pittsburgh. The Jackson Building on Sixth Street and Penn Ave and an A and P warehouse on Lynn Way and Dallas Ave were damaged with an estimated $650000 loss. One firefighter was injured when walls collapsed. Police search for a missing firefighter and a Sun Drug Company cashier.
In Athens twenty people including four women were executed today. A military tribunal on February 17 convicted nine for involvement in the killing of a policeman and plans to assassinate Greek political leaders. The rest were members of a Communist execution squad blamed for hundreds of civilian killings near Athens during the 1944 civil war.
Beulah Michigan AP report says Elie Jane McGuire 33 Pittsburgh housewife confessed to burglary at W. F. Crawford’s Platte Lake summer home. Sheriff says she planned to use funds and 10 bottles of ale to launch an interior decorating venture. Bond set at $10,000. husband may not press charges.
Wright Field launches a new employee training program under the Air Materiel Command. Maj. Gen. James M Bevans notes civilian and military personnel may take four advanced college level courses in subjects like physics engineering mathematics physiology and psychiatry. Two hundred students attend Wilmington College and 300 attend Ohio State University courses, supplementing the existing Air Institute of Technology.
A Chicago civil suit over alleged false arrest and brutality linked to the Suzanne Degnan kidnapping was settled for 20 000 by Hector Verburgh and his wife. Police officials named included Police Commissioner John C Prendergast and Chief Walter Storms. The city said it was not liable and officers paid damages pro rata. Degnan’s abduction and dismemberment led to William G Heirens’s later confession and life sentences.
Oberlin Ohio AP report covers Clyde Miller of Columbia Teachers College saying newspapers seek to provoke mass hysteria that could lead to war. He cites a 1941 New York conference where publishers and officials allegedly planned propaganda against Russia and notes smear campaigns by politicians.
Gov. Herbert commuted several murder sentences including Joseph Ferri in Stark County from first to second degree murder with deportation to Spain and ban on return, Paulino Panattoni in Scioto County to Italy, Stanley Campbell in Franklin County to second degree, and granted conditional pardon to Walter Mozingo.
Hitoshi Ashida, serving as foreign minister and head of the Moderate Democratic Party, was elected prime minister of Japan. The transition marks a shift in leadership within the ruling party and government.
Huntington police used endorsers signatures with fingerprints to arrest Virgil Lester Starr 27 of Huntington on a August burglary charge involving 780 in cash and checks. Starr held in Cabell County jail on 3000 bond awaiting preliminary hearing. He was caught after a Roanoke fugitive warrant and linked to two cashed checks at a Portsmouth tavern via FBI fingerprint files.
Jeanne placed fifth yesterday in a national cherry pie contest run by the National Hatchet C Club honoring George Washington’s birthday. Valeria of Chicago was named the nation’s best pie maker at age 17.
