A Chicago AP report notes that shoppers have more purchasing power than four months ago but less than last year after price controls were removed. It compares 17 basic food items across 1941, 1946, 1947, and a recent month, with beefsteak at 69 cents a pound this weekend.
Portmouth AP report says the Norfolk and Western streamliner Powhatan Arrow derailed at Gennett Creek near Franklin Furnace injuring engineer George Raines and killing fireman Robert Maiden. No passengers reported hurt. The eastbound train from Cincinnati to Norfolk hit a 90 mph stretch, jumped the track after underpass, jeoparding the engine and six cars.
The bitter cold that swept the western regions moved to the Atlantic coast and gulf states. Temperatures near freezing are forecast for tonight as far south as northern Alabama Mississippi and Louisiana with 50s and 60s around New England and the mid Atlantic before a rapid warm up by Saturday. Forecaster J M Porter says Florida may escape the chill and the western plains show moderating temperatures suggesting a short-lived cold spell.
Police arrested two men within six minutes after a $2000 robbery in front of a Cleveland Trust Company branch. Victim James Zuzek, 35, restaurant operator, was robbed by three men as he left the bank office.
City will dress up Veterans Village with painting, street work, lighting and grass seeding after winter delays. Four of ten approved improvements are slated for early action as the project remains labeled temporary and under federal rules.
Governor Herbert sought extradition from West Virginia of Nathaniel Henry Strain, indicted for first degree murder in Columbus. Strain, jailed at Moundsville state prison, is accused of killing 75 year old Alice Lauterbach during a robbery and rape.
Frank R. Buechner, foe of the rackets, is suspended as city manager in Butler County city after a 4-1 council vote. He was hospitalized in fair condition, absent from the meeting. Mark Thomas assumed duties as acting city manager pending a March 17 hearing on charges.
Councilman Rosendahl moves to remove city manager Buechner amid a probe into leadership and policy. William Beckett cites charges including poor judgment and alignment with factional interests. Citizens Steering Committee vows recall petitions to restore a seven member council and uphold good government. Buechner, former Superior Wisconsin manager, has defended his record amid gambling reform battles.
Police hold Joseph H. Petrie after a woman in a Sherman Hotel eight floor room died early today. The deceased, possibly Vera Frances Telford 25 of Norwood Ohio, was found with a baptismal certificate for a child George William Jr born May 18 1943 and her maiden name Boles. Petrie identified himself as room registrant and was detained.
Louis Henry Evers aged 32 died from a chest wound after a 32 caliber pistol was fired during a morning argument. Mrs Evers 36 signed a statement admitting she shot her husband in the incident and is jailed with no charges filed yet.
Ted Roush age 47 was found shot to death beside a fence on his Addison farm. His shotgun lay across the fence as investigators probe the motive and circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
CIO President Philip Murray pleads innocent to charges that the Taft Hartley Act barred political expenditures by unions. The CIO and Murray seek dismissal arguing the ban violates press freedom. trial set if the motion fails. Murray bonds $1000, faces potential penalties for violations by unions and officers.
President Truman departed Washington by plane at 10 32 a m on a 15 day visit to Florida Puerto Rico the Virgin Islands and Cuba. First stop Boca Chica near Key West to overnight. He will meet Puerto Rico governor Jesus T Pinero and Virgin Islands governor William Hastie both appointees and former Howard Law School dean. Three Negro reporters cover the tour marking a first for such trips. The Sacred Cow is used for the trip while the Independence undergoes structural changes.
About fifty Southern Democrats from 11 states vow to oppose Truman civil rights measures, pledging cooperation with resisting governors. GOP leaders call Truman bid for Henry Wallace support, while Truman defends the party’s stance and stresses protecting rights for all groups amid a Caribbean vacation.
Senators Flanders and Bricker forecast a one month stop gap extension of rent controls as the Senate debates a 14 month continuation bill with changes. House committee has approved extending through March. House vote next week. Bricker hints at amendments to restore two provisions on vacancy and 15 percent rent increases with cost justifications.

Toledo AP reports at least 25 Page Dairy Co employees were injured when an ammonia tank exploded. The blast followed a dropped drum hitting a faucet and releasing about 3,000 pounds of gas. other tanks did not explode or ignite.
President Truman released a 359 page 1947 UN year in review noting progress despite Soviet bloc refusals to participate. He and Secretary Marshall warned against complacency while stressing strengthening the United Nations as U S foreign policy cornerstone.
Cleveland AP reports on two Play members who transition from parts to real roles in a war veteran story. The piece notes Miss Cro, daughter of Mr and Mrs Crobaugh of Tiffin, a Columbus School of Ed and Carnegie Tech graduate, among others.
Rev Clarence E Kerr founded Boys Village Inc in 1946 on a 127acre farm between Wooster and Smithville. Mayor Thomas Burke joined as a big brother amid plans to expand to 200 residents with 18 homes a chapel and shops while youths work mornings on livestock gardens and housework and enjoy sports in the afternoons. Community groups and local donors from farms churches bases and clubs support the project.
