AP calculations show that a typical federal employee who retired in January 1973 could receive over $27,500 more in lifetime pension benefits than if the pension merely kept pace with inflation. The 1969 one per cent permanent increase, intended to offset lag, compounds over time and can push payments ahead of cost of living increases, potentially costing $100 billion or more by 1990.
