Westinghouse Broadcasting cited unnamed sources saying the Watergate probe has found more apparent gaps in Nixon conversations with aides. Audio experts who studied the earlier 182 minute Haldeman tape are asked to review the new recordings.
The document notes material withheld and unclear tape involvement while prosecutors’ suspicions rise as new gaps seem to erase crucial portions of discussions under investigation.
Special prosecutor Leon Jaworski sent a strong letter to Sen. James Eastland demanding material for the investigation. The White House said President Nixon ended cooperation, withholding tapes of 27 presidential meetings and related telephone calls, a higher figure than previously stated.
The Federal Energy Office will send teams to 20 states and the District of Columbia to verify supply data.
