Moscow reports say Francis Gary Powers was freed by the Presidium to improve U S Soviet ties. No mention of a U2 swap for spy Rudolf Abel, and Russian media suggest no spies exist. Diplomats view the move as removing a hurdle to closer relations.
Secretary of the Interior Stewart L. Udall sought to ease Ohio concerns after describing Lake Erie as a dying lake. He told reporters in Columbus that water quality worries are overstated and urged joint efforts with state officials and agencies to keep the water fresh.
WARREN Ohio AP a common pleas jury deliberated Saturday night on extortion charges against 48 year old Paul Lamonge indicted in a probe of Warren's 4.5 million sewer project. Lamonge faced counts of attempting to extort 200000 from two firms and larceny by trick 10000.
American U2 pilot Francis Gary Powers walked from East to West Berlin on the Glienicke Bridge in a spy swap for Soviet master spy Rudolf Abel. Powers, 32, had spent 21 months in a Soviet prison after pleading guilty to spying. Abel, 30-year spy, served a sentence for passing military and nuclear secrets to the Kremlin. The exchange also freed Fred Pryor, a U.S. student, who had been imprisoned in East Berlin. President Kennedy announced the swap as Powers boarded a plane for home. Powers’ wife Barbara and his parents learned of the release as brief, emotional reunions awaited. The White House expected Powers to meet family and be interviewed by U.S. officials.

Frederick Leroy Pryor, 28, an American student released in Berlin, passed through London on his way to New York.
