Chutist Survives Long Plunge After Parachute Failure
Parachutist Fred Hastings, 29, of Louisville was in serious condition after a 5,500 foot fall at Seymour Indiana. It was his first jump with the Kentucky Parachute Association. His reserve parachute briefly opened, saving his life after his main chute failed to deploy properly. James Tittle, also of Louisville, witnessed Hastings free fall for about 20 seconds before pulling his cord at about 3,000 feet. Hastings landed feet first in a soft wet field.

Washington Wheat Subsidy Sparks Congressional Gripes
Washington report notes the anticipated sale of 26 million bushels of wheat to Russia led by Cargill Inc with 7.84 million bushels durum. Subsidies average 78.5 cents a bushel on durum, higher than 73.5 cents on durum sold by Continental Grain. Critics say subsidies raise transport costs via ship costs and domestic world price gaps. Transfer: Mrs John F Kennedy moved into a Georgetown townhouse. Antismoking: Air Force chief says a soft sell anti smoking campaign will target young airmen with persuasion rather than bans, deeming bans ineffective.
