In Dayton Ohio AP report Sammie the nosy starling vanished from the cockpit of a P63 at Wright Patterson Air Force Base museum after entering through an air vent. Police and museum staff searched with a key and hours of suspense as crowds watched the bird reappear atop the pilot seat by nightfall.
Senate investigators reveal secret testimony on Baker s Haitian meat deal amid broader questions of conflicts of interest and authority while Marina Oswald s statements to the Warren commission may shape how the Kennedy case records are released. The panel weighs extending Rules Committee powers to probe senators aides and their dealings with Baker as Baker resigned October 7.

In Jackson Mississippi police fired buckshot and used tear gas to break up demonstrations by about 1000 Negroes after a pedestrian’s injury in a traffic accident. Most demonstrators were students from local high schools and colleges. Police dispersed the crowd and three people were treated for superficial buckshot wounds on the Jackson State College campus.
About 464,362 pupils stayed home in a citywide boycott for full integration, with officials calling it largely a fizzle while some students joined picket lines and marches. Absence totals far exceeded typical, and 3,537 teachers were also absent. Civil rights leaders consider next boycott dates amid protests surrounding the Jackson State incident and campus disruptions on Lynch Street.
In Tuskegee and Notasulga, riot-trained state troopers moved in under federal orders to integrate the communities amid fears of racial violence. Notasulga Mayor James Rea appealed to Gov. George Wallace for trooper deployment to the area to curb potential unrest.

A blizzard like snowstorm hit Texas New Mexico and parts of Oklahoma with drifts up to seven feet and up to 10 inches of additional snow forecast. At least three deaths occurred as highways froze and travel halted. A Greyhound bus skid in but all 25 aboard were safe. Power outages affected Texico Clovis Portales and Farwell. Local farmers hailed the moisture for spring wheat while roadblocks warned motorists.
A 17-year-old car hop testified that Byron De La Beckwith’s car was parked within a few hundred feet of the Medgar Evers murder scene the night of the shooting. She said the car was left in a corner of the lot at the drive-in where she worked in Jackson Mississippi.
