Artie Shaw clarinetist and bandleader of the Big Band era died at 94 in Thousand Oaks California. Illness preceded his passing according to his orchestra manager Will Curtis. Shaw rose to fame with Begin the Beguine in 1938 and enjoyed a five figure weekly salary at his peak alongside Goodman Dorsey and Miller. He later left music to focus on writing and other pursuits while his bands produced hits like Frenesi and Stardust with collaborations including Billie Holiday and Buddy Rich.

Montana high court: Gay couples are equal

The Montana Supreme Court ruled 4-3 that the state constitution’s equal protection guarantees extend to gays, requiring the state university system to offer the same health benefits to unmarried same sex partners as to heterosexual partners. The decision reversed a 2002 ruling, not addressing gay marriage. The suit began when University of Montana denied coverage for lesbian partners of two employees.
