A major earthquake devastated Managua with reports of 18000 dead from Costa Rica Health Ministry radio message and earlier tallies of 200 dead. Up to 5000 fatalities and 50000 injuries were feared as fires raged and water and electricity failed.
In Belfast during a three day truce, two car bombs exploded near a Masonic hall causing property damage but no injuries. Gunmen attacked a Ardoyne home wounding none of the sleeping mother and child. Army posts came under fire with no casualties reported.
A jet liner carrying Norwegians home for the holidays crashed in a forest clearing west of Oslo. Most of the 45 aboard were killed. seven survived including one Dane, with three missing. The plane went down minutes before landing at Oslo.
Former President Harry S. Truman, 88, remained comatose and critically ill after hospitalization for heart, lung, and kidney strain. A hospital spokesman reported slight improvements in blood pressure and respiration, though he was still in a severely critical state with fluid in the lungs decreasing only modestly.
