North Vietnam denies reports that Defense Minister Vo Nguyen Giap is dead after a claimed Haiphong mine incident. U.S. airpower mounts its largest blitz of the war with 14 planes downed and 55 airmen missing as Hanoi claims further B52 losses near Haiphong.
Former President Harry S. Truman remained in very serious condition after a period of unconsciousness and instability lasting about 90 minutes. Doctors noted kidney treatment and chemical therapy were ongoing to address lung congestion and blood chemistry while monitoring blood pressure and pulse rate.
President Nixon's aides say he may order a Christmas pause in the heavy air and sea bombardment of North Vietnam. He aims to end the war with a negotiated settlement and plans a quiet Christmas at their villa in Key Biscayne with his wife, while top advisers Kissinger and Haig depart for holidays.
In Arctic Village Alaska the 17th Tactical Air Lift Squadron drops paratroopers in red jumpsuits and brings 7300 pounds of toys clothes and food from Anchorage merchants. Santa suffers a frostbitten ear yet the village kids celebrate around a bonfire before traveling to a buffet lunch. A child posts a sign promising Santa will return next year.
The AP reports a wave of moderate transatlantic fare cuts by North American carriers reducing the odds of a major price war. British plans for a $136 round trip could prompt further competition, while U S carriers including Pan American World Airways and TWA unveil varying advance booking schemes. All fares await Civil Aeronautics Board approval and would take effect April 1.
In Jacksonville a divorce court hallway shootout left Mary E. Hickson dead and husband Rudell Hickson charged with murder. An off duty officer Fred Lampe joined the gunfire as the couple argued over divorce terms ending a 26 year marriage. Nine shots were fired and 15 people witnessed the incident including two daughters aged 14 and 20.
Forecasters predict partly cloudy skies and fog tonight with lows near 40. Sunday may bring showers and highs in the mid-40s.
A strong earthquake struck Managua Nicaragua early today causing extensive damage. The U S embassy in Managua was destroyed and about one third of the city was on fire with most hospitals leveled. Water electricity and transport were disrupted and highways to the capital were closed.
Navy Cmdr Gordon Ross Nakagawa, 37, was shot down over Haiphong on his third Southeast Asia tour and is now a prisoner of war in North Vietnam. His mother recalls Tule Lake memories from the 1940s and says she trusts the Navy will handle his capture. his family consists of Jeanne Takemoto and three children.
