Disgruntled mechanic surrenders after DC8 hijack drama

SAN FRANCISCO AP A hijacker took two hostages and seized a DC8 jetliner for about 15 hours. Palm J Hinnant 37 surrendered at 6 30 am after one hostage Richard Funk 38 was rushed to Peninsula Hospital and another hostage Jerry Dusenberry 42 released unharmed. FBI agent Charles Bates led the arrest as friends Jones and Hamlet departed the plane amid police action.

City Commission repeals 1945 parking law in Middletown

The Middletown City Commission voted to repeal the 1945 ordinance that allowed night parking enforcement from 2 to 5 a.m. and cited it as long unused. Judge Lamb announced fines for those cited would be canceled, and residents were urged to donate $2 to the Salvation Army instead. The meeting touched on labor tensions with the police and concerns about biased enforcement in the South End.

Medicare premium rise to 7.70 as costs climb

About 25.4 million beneficiaries will pay 50 cents more monthly for hospital and medical insurance starting next July. The Department of Health Education and Welfare announced the hike to cover rising medical costs. The premium will become 7.70, up from 7.20, costing about 152.4 million annually for 12 months. Hospital inpatient costs will rise to a $124 deductible for the first bill, and outlays for Medicare plus supplementary medical insurance are projected to climb from 6 to 7.4 billion in fiscal 1978. The SSA notes 2.5 million disabled under 65 are in the supplementary program.
