The Labor Department reports a 5 percent rise in the Consumer Price Index for November, the largest in five months, with food up 6 percent and other goods up 5 percent. New car prices climbed 1.5 percent amid higher 1978 model and imported vehicle prices.
A fierce winter hit the West with winds up to 100 mph toppling trucks and tearing structures. At Vandenberg Air Force Base a spreading fire killed the base commander and two others. North and Midwest states faced snow and sleet with Missouri to Nebraska tallying up to eight inches. Chicago O Hare delayed up to two hours as crews cleared runways.
Colonel Joseph Turner, commander of the base, was killed when a brush fire swept 1500 acres across the facility near Santa Barbara California. The blaze caused extensive damage and the search for remaining hotspots continued.
Northern Ohio sees snow as winter arrives officially at 6 24 p m. A travelers advisory remains in effect in northwestern counties with snow totals of one to three inches expected there. Northeast Ohio may see one to two inches by evening, central counties one inch, and little to none in the Ohio Valley. A large low pressure system in Michigan drives the wintry pattern with cold Canadian air feeding snow and flurries.

Library officials seek city action to reserve a city owned plot on Main Street between the Manchester Inn and City Building for a future three story 22000 square foot library. The Library Board President Les DuErmit asks for a commitment while officials await time plans and funding. A Jan 3 board meeting will discuss the proposal along with finances and possible federal aid.
