Ten year old Andres Hernandez, once blind and starving in Tegucigalpa, found relief after a December 1975 medical mission at Ochsner Medical Institutions in New Orleans. Six surgeons restored sight and provided daily meals enabling a brighter holiday season.
Andres Hernandez Perez, aided by a Honduran donor, a New Orleans telethon and Ochsner doctors, underwent successful surgery to repair his right eye after a lifetime of eye disease and prior loss of the left eye. The Help Honduras effort funded travel and care.
President Ford condemned Cuba for sending troops to Angola and warned Soviet meddling worsens detente. He argued such actions hinder peaceful relations and vowed to sign an $18 billion tax bill while proposing a $10 billion tax cut if Congress enforces equal spending limits. He said he would run on his record in 1976 and is confident in his standing in most states.
The Census Bureau says nine of the nation’s 10 largest cities moved down in population in 1973 estimates. Seattle San Diego and San Antonio rose into the top ranks while Washington and Cleveland dropped out. New York Chicago Los Angeles Philadelphia Detroit Houston Baltimore Dallas San Diego and San Antonio top the list.
In Tripoli a 53 year old Moslem governor Sheik Kassem Imad was killed by machine gun fire. His wife was wounded as Lebanon crisis deepens with 12 dead during clashes. The assassination alarms political players amid ongoing fighting between Moslem and Christian groups and a fragile five day truce.
An explosion at a corn by products processing plant in Clinton trapped two men for an hour while 19 others were injured. Six firefighters were overcome by gas fumes and needed rescue with oxygen. The blast occurred just before 8 a.m., shattering windows in nearby homes.
Argentine government jets bombed Moron air base while rebel officers vow raids on the Government House where President Isabel Peron stays. The revolt’s leader at the National War College, Brig. Gen. Rodolfo Mujica, defects, and key aides flee to a basement museum as evacuations proceed.
The forecast calls for sunny weather with highs in the low to mid 30s today and tomorrow. Overnight lows tonight range from 15 to 20 degrees with a 10 percent chance of precipitation today and near zero tonight.
