High Holiday Deaths Predicted Across Chicago Area

The National Safety Council predicts 650 to 750 traffic deaths and 27 000 to 33 000 disabling injuries during the 102 hour Christmas holiday period from 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Tuesday. Comparable nonholiday period deaths average 470 with 20 000 injuries. The 1956 Christmas four day period saw 706 deaths, while last year’s three day holiday had 524. Through October, the national traffic toll averaged 110 daily, totaling 33 430 for ten months.

Kennedy says long path to real understanding with Khrushchev

President Kennedy in a TV radio chat says it will be some time before the United States and Soviet Premier Khrushchev achieve real understanding.
