Two Downtown Buildings Destroyed by Fire on Central Avenue
A spectacular downtown fire destroyed a four story furniture store at 1363 Central Ave and damaged adjacent buildings. Damage was estimated around 200 000 with over 60 firemen and 10 trucks responding from multiple towns. Four firemen were injured and treated at Middletown Hospital.

Theatre Fire Fails to Reach Studio Theater
Charlene Mays, 18, concession worker at 1627 First Ave, was alone in the Studio Theater when a fire broke out. An elderly man warned her, but she mistook him for a drunk. Manager William Coran Jr said the show would have opened at 86:30 and the marquee stayed lit as inside lights remained on. The Studio Theater itself was not damaged.
