Fire kills seven and injures many at Providence College dorm

A hair dryer sparked a blaze on the fourth floor of Aquinas Hall at Providence College early today. Seven women died and at least 15 were injured as residents fled into the cold. two jumped from windows to their deaths before ladders could reach them. Fire officials say the fire remained on the top floor and started in a closet where a student was drying clothes.

Israelis arrive in Cairo for Cairo conference show of flags

Israeli delegates and 27 staff plus 35 journalists arrived in Cairo on an E Al Boeing 707 under Egyptian and Israeli flags. Eliahu Ben Elissar urged broader Arab participation as Cyrus Vance pressed Syria in Damascus. Saudi King Hussein may visit to mediate. Armed troops watched the landing.

Tragic Providence College Fire Shocks Rhode Island

Coast Guard hunts for missing New Bedford scallop crew

Rescue teams use eight aircraft and one ship to scour Georges Bank as the 86-foot Navigator, last heard from Wednesday, may have sunk with 13 crewmen aboard. Navy and Canadian forces join Coast Guard planes and a cutter in a wide Atlantic search for a life raft. The vessel carried a British double bottom life raft canopy. engineers suggest possible electrical failure or rapid flooding.
