Ohio will raise maximum weekly unemployment benefits to 95 to 150 dollars starting December 28. New rules also allow back pay for a three week consecutive benefit period, apply only to new claimants, and tighten disqualification for labor dispute workers, with employer tax changes delayed to 1977.
A 52 year old Indonesian consular official FE Abedy died after being injured during an escape from the Indonesian consulate seizure in Amsterdam. The fatality marks the first death in six days of turmoil as authorities report the latest developments from the Justice Ministry.
Report notes an old siege at the consulate where around 25 hostages are held. Another group of South Moluccans hijacked a northern Holland train last Tuesday, killing three Dutchmen and taking about 30 more hostage. A spokesman says Abedy was injured escaping down a rope.
IRA gunmen holding a man and wife in a London apartment refuse a deal to free Sheila Matthews 53 in exchange for food. Police report they will not negotiate and the hostage situation continues as authorities say the gunmen will go to Brixton Prison only as prisoners.
In Beirut, Christian gunmen backed to the sea resisted a large Moslem assault in the downtown hotel and commercial district. Police cited rising deaths and injuries as fighting raged, with fires burning near Phoenicia and other key buildings.
A New Jersey Teamster, Stephen Andretta, who refused to testify before a Detroit grand jury probing James R. Hoffa’s disappearance, is set to return Wednesday. An immunity bid for Andretta is pending after Hoffa’s vanishing on July 30 and related obstruction charges against his associates were dropped.
Snow flurries continue in Middletown tonight with lows in the low 20s and highs in the mid 30s. Yesterday’s high was 43 and overnight low 31. The outlook calls for fair skies Thursday and Friday with a chance of showers Saturday.
A Florida campaign office break-in stole a list of Florida contributors to George Wallace's presidential bid. Campaign official Fitzhugh Powell said burglars took a computerized printout of contributors and several hundred dollars in Wallace donations, and rifled an index of campaign workers.
The World Council of Churches considers censuring the Soviet Union over restrictions on religion. Russian Orthodox leaders warn such action could isolate them. delegates urge open discussion and concern for people in the USSR amid a long standing debate within faith groups.
