Port Hedland in northwest Australia endured Cyclone Joan with 120 mile winds. Police said most homes lost their roofs and floods threatened as residents sought shelter with one casualty reported from a broken arm. The storm center passed about 30 miles away.
Nineteen year veteran Patrolman Robert Lall was shot dead while checking a shop rear door in Cincinnati on the second day of Community Sector Enforcement. Patrolman Robert Oliver wounded the shop owner Richard Struck. Lall died at Cincinnati General Hospital. No charges until prosecutors review the case.
A general alarm blaze at the Congress Hotel in downtown Salt Lake City sent about 90 residents into the streets. No deaths reported. three elderly residents were hospitalized, others moved to nearby hotels as fire crews battled flames and heavy smoke through the early morning hours. The cause remained unknown.
United Airlines canceled all flights through Tuesday while federal mediators resume contract talks with machinists whose strike shut down the carrier. Chief mediator W J Usery Jr says negotiations will continue today after the strike began Friday midnight.

They flew a seven story hot air balloon basket named Condor over Nazca to test if Incas launched from runways to the sun.
