In Fremont Ohio residents aim to complete the home started by firefighter George Kettner before he was killed in a Monday night blaze that destroyed the Joseph Department Store. About $2,077 of a $4,000 goal has been collected as many building trades workers donate their services. Kettner, 34, died from a fractured skull after a fall from a ladder leaving a wife and two daughters.

Ohio State University professor and wife, Dr. George M. Curtis and spouse, received a death threat from two robbers during a Monday night home invasion. Police say Raymond L. Grambo and Jack D. Fleming are charged with armed robbery and kidnapping involving two teenage girls. The suspects fled in a yellow Bantam car. Dr. Curtis, chair of the Department of Research Surgery, and his wife are under protection in Bexley.
Soviet authorities accuse American airlift planes of breaking four power rules in the Soviet sector with 16 incidents noted in a month. Offenses centered on four engine C 54s flying as low as 333 feet. U S air safety officer Gookin says pilots have been briefed to abide by flight rules.
In Monrovia California a dusty crate hid a painting later identified as a 17th century work by Franz Snyders. Dealers value the piece between 4000 and 5000 dollars. The work came from a bequest to James Moir 25 years ago by George Ward, a steamship company heir. The painting depicts dead game, an animal still life typical of Snyders who died in 1657.
Homicide detectives questioned Herbert Gulembo who claimed he killed artist Kathryn Meller in Philadelphia and fled after learning his job required him to dig her grave. Bayard Jenkins was convicted of the murder with death penalty pending his appeal. police say Gulembo’s statements lack first hand involvement and mislead authorities.

Robert E. Stripling, chief investigator for the House Un American Activities Committee, appeared as a surprise witness before the federal grand jury probing alleged Communist espionage. His name had not been listed among witnesses for the fourth day of renewed investigations.
A federal grand jury pushed ahead with its espionage inquiry in New York as progress remains secret. New witnesses emerged yesterday including Donald Hiss, Nathan Levine, and David Carpenter, while the mystery brunette entered twice and vanished unseen.

President Truman said aid to China would be raised when he meets Madame Chiang Kai Shek at a tea. He indicated China aid is her objective and said a further talk remains possible. This marks their first meeting since Madame Chiang pressed for more U S assistance in the Chinese Civil War.
