In Chicago Judge Irwin B. Clarfene presided as Mitchell Thomas, 50, faced auto safety court for leaving the scene after his car struck a parked machine. The license showed he must wear glasses while driving. Thomas admitted obtaining the license by neglecting to state he had no hands. He was fined $100 and his license suspended for one year.
Art Shires once a major league first baseman and boxing participant faces murder with malice aforethought in the death of William Hiram Erwin, a former minor league player and umpire, after a fight on October 3. Erwin died Saturday from injuries, while Shires was released on bond and set for district court.

The 58 nation political committee debated a US China Australia resolution recognizing the U S occupied government in South Korea and creating a UN Korean Commission to pursue reunification and troop withdrawal. President Syngman Rhee authorizes South Korea to apply for UN membership. Foreign Minister Chang Taik Sang says the move follows a message to Dr John Moyun Chang in Paris to pursue admission. Chang denounces Soviet charges and defends U S backing as guarding the republic’s normal government.

Hollywood stunt pilot Paul Mantz was en route from Burbank to New York when his F-51 stalled after an engine failure 80 miles east of Akron at 25 000 feet. He turned back to Cleveland after the supercharger quit and oil pressure fell. Mantz previously set a 1947 west-east record of six hours seven minutes five seconds.
New method of sending secret messages uses pictorial symbols instead of letters. David Sarnoff of RCA announced the invention, with symbols transmitted by facsimile or television to a receiving decoding terminal.
A 25 year old man from Chatfield named Lowell Gray was killed in a traffic accident near Bucyrus. The crash occurred yesterday and authorities identified Gray as the deceased.
