Governor and Hughes deny kidnapping tale in Las Vegas
Gov. Paul Laxalt said Howard Hughes told him in a 45 minute Las Vegas call that he was not kidnapped and had gone to Paradise Island for vacation planned a year ago. The claim of a kidnapping had stirred a Nevada battle over Hughes gambling and property interests.

More than 100 volunteers cleared two truckloads of trash from canal L-67 in Everglades National Park. Park District Manager Robert Peterson praised the effort after crews found widespread litter from fishermen along the nine mile stretch south from the Tamiami Trail near Miami. A husband and wife team aided the cleanup collecting plastic bait containers along a 70 yard section.
