Col John A Herrington, a 46 year old nuclear weapons officer with 24 years of service, was convicted by court martial of voluntary manslaughter in his wife June 41 and attempted manslaughter of his son Joseph 19. He received five years hard labor and dismissal from the Air Force. Brig Gen Hedlund read the sentence. The defense urged his mind snapped under pressure. prosecutors said it was premeditated murder. Herrington loses retirement pay and benefits built over 27 years. The verdict came after an eight day trial. sentencing review by Maj Gen Hudwell may adjust or uphold dismissal.
