U S intelligence officials warn Russia may be testing ground based lasers to blind American satellites guarding against a missile attack. An infrared beaming incident from Western Russia illuminated a U S early warning satellite in synchronous orbit multiple times since Oct 18.
Seasonally adjusted wholesale prices were unchanged in November signaling easing inflation as October’s 1.8 percent rise fades. The index sits 3.7 percent above last year, the smallest 12 month gain since April 1972, versus a 23.5 percent rise prior year.
President Ford told China's leaders that the United States remains committed to complete normalization and that ties will be gradually strengthened as both sides pursue national interests. China's acting premier welcomed the talks as boosting mutual understanding, with no new agreements announced during the four day trip ended by a banquet. Meanwhile 40 Philippine martial law detainees began a hunger strike to spotlight their plight ahead of Ford's Manila visit.
A threatened nationwide rail strike by 70 000 workers was averted as bargainers reached tentative agreement on two issues and continued talks on others. Chief mediator W J Usery urged ongoing bargaining after an all night session as talks resume later today.
The Ohio chapter of Common Cause plans a full-scale lobbying drive in 1976 to win approval of a four point ethics reform program. The effort targets tougher lobbyist disclosures, anti gerrymandering, and updates to campaign finance and conflict of interest laws ahead of the General Assembly return on January 6.
Indonesian South Molucan nationalists seized the Indonesian consulate in Amsterdam as part of a broader Holland crisis. Police reported six attackers with a carbine and pistols, three staff wounded, and several escapees hospitalized after gunfire. In northern Holland a hijacked train hostage situation continued with one man killed and 37 remaining, as hijackers demand a flight out of the country.
Fire destroyed the Kent Rove and upstairs Water Street Saloon and Pirates Alley after flames spread from an overheated space heater. About $20,000 in musical instruments for two bands were lost. instruments were uninsured.
