The Labor Department data show unemployment up 0.2 points to 8.1 percent in November, with 200,000 more people jobless, raising total to 78 million. Wholesale prices also posted a third straight monthly increase signaling continued inflation pressure as Carter weighs tax cuts and spending boosts to revive the economy.
Cyrus R. Vance, 59, a New York lawyer and former Pentagon official, is Carter’s likely pick for secretary of state. Carter declined to confirm but did not deny Vance. an announcement was expected at a news conference, with Lance as budget director possible.
Gov. Rhodes reorganizes the Ohio Highway Safety Director Donald Cook and Motor Vehicle Registrar Curtis Andrews after a feud over performance. Robert Chiaramonte becomes director, Dean Collison new registrar, Cook moves to crime alert projects, Andrews to administration deputy director. Rhodes claims no law violations and orders improved 24 hour data service.
President elect Jimmy Carter said he will send an informal message to the Soviet Union expressing reciprocal commitment to peaceful relations and to nuclear disarmament. He outlined moving aggressively for arms control and a broader U.S. Soviet effort to cut nuclear weapons, noting Brezhnev’s assurances no early tests. He spoke during an NBC Today interview.
Frigid arctic air pushed into the Great Lakes with subzero lows across the region. Toledo tied a record low for December 2 at 11 degrees below zero, while Cleveland South Bend and Lansing also set new date records. Snow lingered in western New York and Buffalo inching toward forty plus inches for the season.
