U S Education Commissioner Ernest L Boyer rails against jargon in official writings and policy. He says teachers should focus on clear speech, criticizing acronyms and legalese that clutter communications and mislead readers.
Gov. James A. Rhodes vetoed a collective bargaining bill for more than 500000 public employees. He criticized key provisions including right to strike binding arbitration and agency shop. The bill would have created a state board and a peace council and set unit elections with union dues mandatory for all within a bargaining unit.
In Hamilton Bermuda two Black Beret Cadres members Erskine Burrows and Larry Tacklyn were hanged at dawn after a night of rioting by about 500 black youths. The executions followed a 1973 murder spree including the slaying of Bermuda governor Sir Richard Sharples and Police Commissioner George Duckett. A hotel fire seven miles away killed three, with evacuees totaling nearly 900. Police sealed off Casemates Prison and monitored for further violence.
Washington sources indicate a proposed tax cut for next year totaling 20 to 25 billion dollars. Three quarters of the savings would go to individuals, a shift from prior plans and a higher share for personal taxpayers.
A police department lists 425 7700 as the crime alert and suspicious activity reporting number for residents to call with any incidents or concerns.
Weather today brings broken clouds and sun with a low of 34 degrees. Yesterday hit 50 and no rain fell. Tonight looks mostly clear with a near 30 low. The 1976 November unemployment rate edged from 7.0 to 6.9 percent while employment climbed by 950000 to 92.2 million, the largest monthly gain since 1960. The labor force grew, with nonfarm payrolls up 310000 to 83.2 million and women’s rate rising to 7.1 percent.
Libya presses for economic and diplomatic boycott in response to Anwar Sadat’s peace overture. Khadafy urges other Arab states to sever ties with Egypt while Syria’s stance remains unclear and Iraq and Palestinian delegates back the move. Egypt faces limited immediate damage without Gulf oil subsidies.
About 900 United Mine Workers members walked out at Meigs No. 1 and Raccoon No. 3 mines in Meigs and Vinton counties starting at midnight. Local 1990 and Local 1957 members cited stalled contract talks in Washington as a cause and union leaders urged a return to work.
