Washington AP reports two U S ice breakers Burton Island and North Wind pushed through McClure Strait to connect the Arctic Ocean and Viscount Melville Sound, marking the first modern effort toward a Northwest Passage route though still blocked by heavy ice and lacking commercial value. Carol Hurricane Advances Toward Carolina Coast

A hurricane with 115 mph winds moved NW at about 5 mph toward the Carolina region. About 300 miles east of Jacksonville it extended hurricane winds 50 miles from center and gale winds 100 miles out. Carol is the third storm of the season, with prior systems Alice and Barbara noted in the region.

Girls Convicted of Christchurch Mother Killing by Brick

Goodyear Workers Vote On Pay Increase Offer

About 23 000 Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co workers vote on an agreement to end a 52 day strike in exchange for hourly pay boosts averaging 64.2 cents. Seven Killed In India Riots Provoke Blast of Protests
