Amy's Law would require judges to weigh factors in first-time domestic violence cases
Ohio lawmakers consider Amy's Law to require judges to assess mental health history, prior DV or violence, court order violations, threats to others, and whether high bail would hinder treatment. Current law delays such factors to cases with prior DV or protection order violations. The bill would bar pretrial release before judge review, create a risk assessment task force for bonds, and needs co-sponsorship and passage in both chambers. Amy Rezos will testify. Butler County prosecutor Robin Piper backs higher bonds, praising existing practice but seeking improvement.
