Administration economists say most Americans are better off financially than they feel. Herbert Stein notes many think inflation is higher than reality, with real disposable income up 5 percent over the year while fears persist.
Kissinger promised greater accessibility to Congress and will testify as often as the Senate Foreign Relations Committee desires. Nixon asked him to move policy making from the White House to the State Department while preserving executive privilege for personal conversations and direct advice to the President. The President announced Rogers will resign and Kissinger becomes secretary while remaining national security adviser.
Former FBI officials say break-ins at foreign embassies occurred during the Kennedy Johnson and Eisenhower years aimed at stealing code books and cryptographic data. They estimate fewer than 10 annual incidents over 15 to 20 years ending in 1966, while White House officials deny broad involvement.
A package bomb exploded on the 22nd floor of the London Stock Exchange injuring a 25 year old woman worker. Scotland Yard blames the IRA as ten letter bombs and fifteen incendiaries were found in London offices and stores. No. 10 Downing Street received a booby trapped book bomb defused with no casualties. Additional hoaxes and a bomb found at a central subway entrance disrupted travel.
Edwin M. Gaudet 29, jailed on a federal threat charge, faces state counts of intent to kill three Taos area police officers Jose Lucero Robert Tafoya and Harold Anglada. District Magistrate Norbert Martinez said the state case stems from an exchange of ire during the search. A federal hearing is set for Aug 30 on possible transfer to Louisiana where Gaudet faces additional charges.
Dayton introduces the DASH program Downtown Area Short Hope offering free rides within the 96 block business district and Oakwood. Riders receive DASH boards to distinguish trips inside the zone, with minimal revenue loss and potential to boost overall ridership.
